The Power of Words

Nov 11, 2020

One of the most impactful lessons I’ve learned is the power of words. More specifically, how words dictate our subconscious thinking and relate to using the Law of Attraction.

Anyone who has read books like ‘The Secret’ or has a basic understanding of the Law of Attraction, will already know the theory that ‘The Universe’ (or whatever great spiritual power you believe in) AND your own subconscious mind, ignore the context of negative statements.

So if you say “I don’t want”, what The Universe (and your subconscious) hears is “I want”.

It rather changes your perspective when you realise those sentences you use without thinking are generating the opposite outcome to the one you are expressing!

Would you really be saying “I don’t want to get fat” if you realised you’re instructing your subconscious will do all it can to ensure you edge closer to obesity?

Think of those negative words and how you’ve experienced them.

“I’m not going to miss the train” = you reach the platform just as the doors lock and the train pulls out.

“Don’t forget the milk” = you remember everything but!

One of the kids says “I won’t do it again” = you know they absolutely will.

You can’t be late” = someone is kept waiting.

That motorway favourite “Don’t text and drive” has you itching for your phone.

One of the saddest examples was in the home of a man who had lost the love of his life suddenly and unexpectedly, just days after he gave her a woodcut bearing the words “Love never dies”.

My advice? Reframe your thinking and choose your words with extra caution.

“I prefer to….” “Remember to”, “I will”, “I am”, “I choose to” cover many options and provides instant personal responsibility, lifting the positive energy around you.

And let’s face it, we could all do with a huge injection of positivity in our lives right now!

Pay attention for one day and see how many negative words you use. Challenge yourself to change them up for something better!
